Cyberpunk 2077 was just released last December 10, and we, along with the millions of players who were waiting to get their hands on this game, finally got the chance to experience Night City in all its glory over the past two weeks. But, while this game is without a doubt visually stunning, it has been receiving mixed reviews, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen the bugs posted all over online. And so, today, we’ll be explaining why Cyberpunk 2077 was never going to be enough before it even released.

A Game That Was Over 8 Years In The Making

For a short history lesson, Cyberpunk 2077 was first teased over eight years ago, and with all the delays we’ve encountered just this 2020, it almost seemed like the jokes and memes we’re going to be right. However, now that it has been released, it almost feels like a dream for the vast player base that didn’t give up waiting, for most of them have most likely turned 20 these past eight years of being hopeful.

After such a disaster-stricken 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 presented itself as a gift, a reward for surviving and getting through such a tough year. And, believe it or not, it actually delivered great gameplay, stunning visual features, and a cast of memorable characters like Johnny Silverhand and many more.

But, it suffered from one thing.

It Was Overhyped

Cyberpunk 2077 was overhyped; the attention and exposure of this game only continued to grow over the eight years it was in the making, setting unrealistic expectations for its release. People were clamoring and believe this to be the game of all games, the best RPG, the greatest in visual fidelity, and a genre-defining triple-A title to be crowned king.

Such expectations made it near impossible for CD Projekt Red to deliver, and everyone expected too much out of the game before it even had the chance to prove itself. Cyberpunk 2077 was doomed to be enough for all the players because the bar was set too high. However, we also can’t excuse some of the problems the game has as well.

Game-Breaking Bugs

While the core gameplay and overarching storyline were fantastic to experience, any honest game review would never forget to point out the game-breaking bugs that made it near impossible to enjoy unless you were fortunate. From NPCs doing weird things to character models giving up and doing a T-pose, restarting the game from bug or crash to fix it was not uncommon. These occurrences pull you out of such a beautiful world and ruin a lot of the experience.

Plus, we can’t forget to mention the gameplay on consoles, where the framerate was horrendous, and you were forced to cut corners to give you any semblance of a smooth playthrough. So, unless you had a high-end gaming PC or were fortunate enough to have one of the next-gen consoles, playing the game was like a gamble.

However, It’s Not A Bad Game

But, despite all of this critique, don’t let this stop you from getting the game because it’s not entirely bad. If you can get past all the bugs and rid yourself of too high expectations, the core gameplay feels very rewarding, and it is a solid action title with plenty of replayability.
It’s crazy how easy you can get lost and immerse yourself in Night City, jumping from side quest to side quest and hopefully finishing the main storyline while you’re at it. There’s a lot of potential with Cyberpunk 2077, and while it’s getting a fairly mixed reputation now, it will get better with more patches and hotfixes in the future.

Verdict: Needs Polishing

Overall, while the game is great at certain aspects, no one will deny that it feels unfinished due to the bugs and fixes it needs. We think the game needs a lot of polishing, and if the Ai is any major concern, CD Projekt Red will need a lot of game developer outsourcing and crunch time if they want to do some damage control. Cyberpunk 2077 scores a solid 7/10 for the time being, with the potential to become better.
