OPPO Find X Hands-On: A first look at OPPO’s latest flagship
From a distance, it’s easy to mistake the OPPO Find X for the Samsung Galaxy S9, with its near-edge-to-edge screen and curvy body. But the Find X takes that familiar design and builds on it with the introduction of a retractable motorised panel that keeps the front-facing camera off the screen, eliminating the need to interrupt the area with a controversial notch.
OPPO Find X Price
The OPPO Find X will retail for €999 when it hits the shelves in Europe. The OPPO Lamborghini Find X Special Edition will command a steeper €1699.

OPPO Find X Release Date
The OPPO Find X will be available in France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands from August. There’s no word on whether it will launch in the United Kingdom.
But it’s not just the front-facing camera that’s retractable. The rear-facing camera is also completely hidden when the handset is switched off or the camera application is closed.
OPPO says it takes around half a second for the camera tray to emerge and having had a chance to have a play around with the handset at its unveiling at the Louvre in Paris, I’d say that’s pretty accurate.
What’s interesting is that the Find X doesn’t offer fingerprint recognition of any kind, even though earlier rumours claimed it would have an in-screen sensor. OPPO is instead betting big on facial-recognition; there’s a small 3D scanner baked into the front-facing camera that starts working as soon as the tray begins to rise, authenticating you before it’s even finished emerging.
The camera setup itself is made up of three sensors: one on the front (25-megapixel) and two on the rear (20-megapixel + 16-megapixel). I didn’t have as much time as I’d have liked to test them out at the unveiling, but the few shots I took in the dark, bulb-lit testing environment looked good with plenty of detail.
Just like the Huawei P20, the Find X is also armed with an AI-driven scene-recognition tool that’s capable of detecting the different components that make up the scene, altering the aperture and colour temperature when it sees fit. The intention here is to take the best possible picture of whatever’s in the frame, be it a waterfall or a plate of food.

The pièce de résistance here is the 6.4-inch near-edge-to-edge screen. It’s an AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2440 x 1080 and it’s about as good as you’d expect a Full HD panel to be. Colours are accurate and detail is sharp from a distance, but the quality starts to drop when you hold the handset a few centimetres away from your eyes.
For what OPPO wants the Find X to be, which is the most immersive smartphone on the market, the Full HD screen its perfect. I stuck an episode of Stranger Things on and was blown away by how good it looked. The lack of a noticeable surrounding bezel – the Find X has a screen-to-body ratio of 93.8% – instantly snaps you into a deep media-consuming trance.
Under the hood, there’s a Qualcomm-made Snapdragon 845 and 8GB of RAM, positioning the Find X above the bulk of the other flagship smartphones on the market in terms of raw power – on paper, at least. In the real world, however, it could be the slowest of the bunch if OPPO’s Color OS interface, which is skinned atop Android 8.1 Oreo, isn’t optimised properly.
OPPO Lamborghini Find X Special Edition
OPPO also showcased another variant of the Find X at its gathering at the Louvre.
It’s called the OPPO Lamborghini Find X Special Edition and comes with some design tweaks designed to make it stand out, like a carbon fiber paint job. The most notable difference, however, is the inclusion of Super VOOC fast-charging, capable of taking the 3730mAh cell from zero to full in 35 minutes.
The standard Find X, on the other hand, comes with VOOC. That’s nothing to turn your nose up at, though, as it offers two hours of usage with a 15-minute charge, according to the folks at OPPO. That’s around 30 percent of the handset’s 3730mAh battery capacity – so, using that as a basis for our calculations, a full charge should take just over an hour.
OPPO Find X Initial Impressions: What’s it like?
The OPPO Find X without a doubt delivers the most immersive mobile viewing experience on the market, which is a good reason to be interested in it, but how it performs in the real-world remains untested. If it can ace that, we could be looking at one of the best smartphones of 2018.
